Joburg Ballet’s SCARCITY is an exhilarating trio of works showcasing one South African premiere and two world premieres. Scarcity is something many South Africans have become accustomed to, whether through a lack of service delivery within the urban context or a loss of dignity. These works interrogate the social context of our lives and explore the absence of natural and material resources and the loss of memory, identity, and self. For SCARCITY, German-based choreographer Hannah Ma created The Void while iconic South African dance maker Dada Masilo’s first work for Joburg Ballet, Salomé, is inspired by the play by Oscar Wilde. The third ballet is the first South African staging of Dutch-based choreographer Jorge Pérez Martínez’s Azul, set to music for the classical guitar.
