Margaretastraat: Jannie du Toit

WITH Jannie du Toit and Chanie Jonker MUSICAL DIRECTOR Jannie du Toit PRODUCER JNS Musiek

In this production, Jannie du Toit talks about liedjie-aande (evenings of song) in 1981 and 1982 at his home in 28 Margareta Street, Pretoria. It became legendary and played an important role in the Musiek en Liriek movement. Poet-singers such as Koos du Plessis, Coenie de Villiers, Lucas Maree and Jannie du Toit inspired aspiring writers and singers with Afrikaans music reminiscent of the folk music of the sixties. There was no entrance fee and most of the singers and audience members simply sat on the floor. Lucas Maree later told how he decided to start writing in Afrikaans during such a liedjie-aand. The music and stories of a dozen odd song-makers are included.
