Sculpting from the Heart

WITH Johan Steyn GALLERY Art@Africa

Johan Steyn creates traditional bronze sculptures based on the legend of Minki of Africa, as told by Louis Steyn – the artist’s grandfather and a game warden in the Kruger National Park during the 1930s. In these many stories told to his children, Minki interacts with various wild animals. In his retelling of these narratives, Johan captures Minki and the Sunbird which relates to the Lowveld of South Africa. The Sunbird is a symbol of hope and a reminder that we still have time to act. In Minki and the Martial Eagle, Minki is on a journey to the Cape coast while the series Minki and the Starfish is related to the marine life of the Cape coast of South Africa.

To see a child with an animal reminds us of our responsibility to preserve what is left for them to enjoy. Minki is not only an agent of nature but also an agent of our internal world. There are endangered species within us too.
