A Re Tshamekeng (Kom ons speel)

WITH Malebogo Molokoane (Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto-wenner in 2022) CURATOR dr. Paul Bayliss (senior spesialiskurator van die Absa Galery en Museum)

In this compelling body of work, Malebogo delves into the intricacies of emotional gestures and facial expressions through her artistic explorations. She creates memorable, fun board games and indigenous games using a variety of glass techniques, such as blowing, kiln burning, kiln casting, beading and sand casting. Appropriately, the title A Re Tshamekeng, translates to “let’s play”.

Malebogo cleverly depicts the depth of human emotions by drawing parallels between the geological layers of the soil and the layers of the skin. Her artistic practice is profoundly influenced by her recent experiences, reflecting the nuances of her journey and everyday interactions in predominantly white environments. Through her evocative games, she invites viewers to engage with the raw and honest expressions captured within the layers of glass, encouraging them to reflect on their own journeys and embrace the transformative power of play.
