’n Gegewe perd, ’n tert en ander diere

WITH Evert Esterhuizen

Wild animals don’t have to be defined by the khaki and dirty green outfits of game rangers and colours of off-road Land Rovers. This exhibition plays with the appearance of the Big Five and other wild creatures to make them more fabulous. The exhibition also explores what it looks like when so-called animal characteristics are applied to people: What does a piglike metro man, or a catty floozie look like? The symbiotic relationship between pet and human is examined – how they are part of human’s ups and downs and how we shape their world. Animality in Afrikaans metaphors also come under scrutiny.

The above is viewed through the lens of human’s intrinsic love and dependence on design – regarding what occurs in nature, as well as the influence that amongst others bright colours, repetition and natural patterns have on the human psyche. We have enough darkness in the world… Maybe it is time to surround ourselves with light heartedness, energy, radiant colours, and patterns!
