We all want someone waiting for us when we get home from a tiring and stressful day. Someone to express excitement at our arrival, greeting us with shows of affection. Someone to listen patiently, encouraging us to change gears and move on to the next stage of the day. Pets do all that. Many people consider pets as their children or as part of the family. While dogs and cats are particularly popular, the list of cherished animals is much longer. Think of horses and ponies, birds, rodents like mice and hamsters, and reptiles of various descriptions. Arguably, even fish and insects qualify. Whatever their species, these are all creatures we care for – and care about. They live among us. We give them individual names.

The group of artists forming part of this exhibition depict various beloved animals through a multitude of mediums: from ceramics to painting and printmaking. Through their eyes the rewarding relationship we have with pets and the significant role they play in our lives become apparent.
